94.1 WHRP is proudly celebrating Women and Men in our community who are “Black, Bold & Brilliant. Here’s a look at the community leaders we put the spotlight on during the month of February.

February 1st.

Today, 94.1 WHRP is proud to recognize Shelly “Saxman” Williams as we begin our Community Leader Spotlight series for Black History Month. A leader with a quiet strength his powerful performance on the saxophone brings together people from various age groups, ethnic backgrounds, and socio-economic situations. Shelly is a native of Northwest Alabama, and a graduate of Bradshaw High School. An avid photographer as well, he has worked diligently in the community with both the Old Timers’ and Members Only Social Club’s here in Huntsville. We appreciate his talent, humbleness, and leadership here in the Tennessee Valley. It is our esteem pleasure to recognize Shelly “Saxman” Williams for Black History Month. Today, 94.1 WHRP is proud to recognize Daniel Kasambira, as we continue our Community Leader Spotlight series for Black History Month. He is the President & CEO at the United Way of Madison County in Huntsville. Daniel is a community advocate, and he always believes in putting people first. He contributes mightily serving on boards and committees that include the Community Action For Youth (CAFY) Board of Directors, Jazz In The Park Steering Committee and the Alabama Association of Non-Profits. An amazing Real Estate professional, she is so dedicated and knowledgeable. A humanitarian who is very compassionate, Cynthia served in non-profit management for 10 years before following her heart’s desire in Real Estate. The presenting sponsor for the 2022 Jazz in the Park Concert series in Big Spring, Cynthia loves giving back to the Huntsville community. Her experience and relationships have resulted in so many successes and awards. Tish believes in giving back to the community, and one way she has reached out to the Tennessee Valley is with her “Money Monday” segment on 94.1 WHRP. Her business acumen is so well respected, and Tish gives common sense solutions to manage your finances. She has been a blessing to so many, helping them to better handle their resources. Today, 94.1 WHRP is proud to recognize Larry E Lewis Jr., as we continue our Community Leader Spotlight series for Black History Month. Larry is a native of North Alabama, and we have so much admiration for what he has accomplished. As President of the government contractor PROJECTXYZ, he spearheaded the company’s acceptance into the DOD Mentor Protégé program. Larry and his wife, Kimberly Caudle-Lewis, also made history becoming the first African-American owners of WTZT-TV in Athens. Mr. Lewis’ also donates his time and resources to support local non-profit organizations. We are so happy to feature Larry E. Lewis, Jr. today, as we continue our Community Spotlight series for Black History Month.

Today, 94.1 WHRP is proud to recognize Angelia Martin, as we continue our Community Leader Spotlight series for Black History Month. She is the founder of ScholarAid, a non-profit which serves youth in the community. Ms. Martin is also a graduate of the city of Huntsville’s Inaugural Civic Engagement Academy. An independent contractor with 30 years of experience in abstracting title and land records, she is also a Notary Public. She is also a proud charter member of Iota Phi Lambda Sorority, Incorporated. We are so happy to feature Angelia Martin today, as we continue our Community Spotlight series for Black History Month.

Today 94.1 WHRP is proud to recognize Terry Russell Green for her work in the community as a leader, teacher and mentor. Terry is a former Miss Alabama State University, and received the school’s ‘Advancement Award’. The honor is given to an alumna whose professional efforts have created innovation, positive change and notable advancement. As president of the Central North Alabama Alumnae Association of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., she has been instrumental in setting up events that focus on heart health, and is an advocate of the American Heart Association. She also has a passion for the voting process, and led the charge by initiating voter registration drives in the Tennessee Valley. She is the founder of Huntsville Magazine, a source for discovering and experiencing all things culture, travel, entertainment and more in the Rocket City. An alumna of Howard University, she has traveled the world, and was a proud Fulbright Fellow where she studied in Sendai Japan. Today 94.1 WHRP is proud to recognize Judise Harris Lanier. A graduate of J.O. Johnson High School, she continued her education at Vanderbilt University in Nashville. A career professional, she believes in giving back to the community. She is the past president of the Central North Alabama Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Judise was the chairperson for the ”Rogue: Go Red Event” that focused on heart health. Because of her leadership, the event successfully raised funds for the American Heart Association. We are so thankful for her willingness to be front and center in the community. Today, we are so happy to recognize Judise Harris Lanier for hear leadership in the community.

Today we recognize L C Smith. A native of Huntsville, he is founder and CEO of Real Fathers Making a Difference (R Fathers Mad), Inc. A 501(c)3, R Fathers Mad has now been serving the Huntsville/Madison County for more than a decade. The organization seeks to rekindle youth commitment to education, help develop moral/ethical values, and builds positive self-esteem among teens. L.C. Smith has been totally committed to personally assisting young adults, and we are thankful for his service to the community. Dokk Savage is a nationally published photographer, adjunct professor of photography, speaker and business owner. Dokk’s goal is to always inspire his clients with his high-energy and passionate approach in addition to his skill set. His drive is fueled by his desire to make the vision of every client a reality. His craft benefits from him being a life-learner. Dokk researches information to aid in him conveying the message of his clients accurately. It could be a dynamic headshot or portfolio images for a fashion model. Either end of the spectrum, his goal is to ensure his client’s story is told the way they envisioned. His motto is “Stand out with your brand out”. COMMUNITY LEADER SPOTLIGHT Black, Bold & Brilliant…

94.1 WHRP is happy to showcase outstanding achievement in the Tennessee Valley, as we celebrate Black History Month. Today we are pleased to put the spotlight on William Smothers, who is the founder of Speakin’ Out News. He started the long-running publication with approximately $800 and a dream. Mr. Smothers has seen Speakin’ Out News grow from a weekly circulation of 1,000 to more than 25,000. The concept started in September 1980 as Speakin’ Out Magazine, a general interest monthly magazine. It eventually transitioned to a weekly newspaper format. Mr. Smothers is credited with making Speakin’ Out News one of the most popular African-American formatted newspapers in the country. He is a dedicated and hardworking man who has made an impact in our community. February 17th

COMMUNITY LEADER SPOTLIGHT Black, Bold & Brilliant…

Chester “Tre” Rogers is a native of Huntsville, and although he is known for his prowess on the football field having landed in the NFL, this graduate of Grambling State University, by way of Lee High School also had aspirations of being an actor. He is so proud of his hometown, and is always giving back to the community in which he grew up. He implemented a yearly backpack giveaway for students here in the Huntsville area, and also led the charge at Christmas with a toy giveaway. As an actor he has landed roles in the film Constellation, that was actually filmed in Huntsville and his most recent effort is starring in the Starz drama series ‘BMF’. We are so proud of his success, and we appreciate him for always remembering the city where he was raised. Today we recognize Chester “Tre” Rogers as a community leader who has made a difference.

COMMUNITY LEADER SPOTLIGHT Black, Bold & Brilliant…

94.1 WHRP is happy to showcase outstanding achievement in the Tennessee Valley, as we celebrate Black History Month. Clifford L. March Jr. is a native of Montgomery Alabama and he joined the United States Army following high school serving for more than two decades and two combat tours. After serving in the US Army, he worked for the United Nations moving to Liberia West Africa to help rebuild the Liberian Army after their civil war. He is also a small business owner of FM Productions Entertainment Group, executive producer of the PODCAST Cooking with Chris, and the star of the new sports talk show Cliff Notes. A philanthropist, he offers back to school backpack drives, free food and free haircuts to the homeless. 94.1 WHRP is happy to showcase outstanding achievement in the Tennessee Valley, as we celebrate Black History Month. Dr. Kerry B. Warner is a graduate of East Limestone High School, and is an ordained minister. Dr. Warner owns K&B Tax Service, SETS Revealed, LLC, & The Palace HSV, (Huntsville’s premier luxe event center). A community advocate, Dr. Warner is the founder of “Soulful Events
Expo”; a community expo designed to provide local small businesses an opportunity to interact with the community. Dr. Warner serves on the board of directors for HEALS, Inc., a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to providing accessible, quality health care for children through collaborative efforts with the Huntsville City/Madison County school systems and the medical community. Additionally, he serves on the board of directors for Sydney’s HOPE Foundation, Inc., and has served as an international missionary in Haiti. A husband and proud father of two daughters, Dr. Warner is also a published author. He is a dedicated servant, and philanthropist who loves giving back to the community. She is a dynamic leader with the Aviation and Missile Command (AMCOM) at Redstone Arsenal, AL. Cynthia is a graduate of Alabama A&M University, the Defense Acquisition University (Senior Service College Fellowship Program); and furthered her education at Cornell and Webster Universities. Her passion in academia and scholarship can not be overstated. Her work in the community does not go unnoticed either as she contributes mightily, and remains engaged helping those in need. She has served on voter advocacy committees, and has contributed her time and resources to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. Today, we proudly acknowledge Cynthia McCrary for her continued success, and for work the she is doing in the community. The Tennessee Valley has long been a place where “movers” and “shakers” showcase their God-given ability, those history-makers like Dr. Daniel K. Wims. He is the 12th president of Alabama A&M University. An experienced leader and educator, he has a resume that includes stints and a number of other HBCUs that prepares him for this opportunity. Dr. Wims is hoping to lead the AAMU into artificial intelligence in cybersecurity, push data analytics, improve coding capabilities among a wider range of students, and recruitment of faculty in bio and alternative energy. A well-respected academician, Dr. Wims is a visionary who is leading Alabama A&M into the future. We are grateful to have amazing modern-day history making professionals in our community like Dr. Daniel K. Wims . Business-owners, leaders, managers, and influencers like Dr. Wims have stepped out on faith, and we take this opportunity to put the spotlight on them and their success. 94.1 WHRP is happy to showcase outstanding achievement in the Tennessee Valley, as we celebrate Black History Month. Today we are pleased to put the spotlight on Jerry Nash of Decatur. A Computer and Information Systems graduate from Alabama A&M University, he is an entrepreneur with a number of business ventures in the “River City” and owner of Nash BBQ with two locations in the City of Decatur. Jerry is known in the community for his philanthropy, supporting little league athletics, making donations to education efforts in the area, mentoring budding entrepreneurs and volunteering to causes in the church. He is also an active member of community-oriented organizations that give back; the Alabama A&M University Alumni Association, Tennessee Valley School Alumni Association, Ascension Lodge #72 F&AM, DMDA of Decatur Morgan County. He is a present and active voice always working to make things happen. Today, 94.1 WHRP is proud to recognize Coach Calvin Fletcher, as we continue our Community Leader Spotlight series for Black History Month. He is known affectionately as “Coach” and is a “Father Figure” to many in the Huntsville Community. He is a native of Huntsville, and a graduate of Lee High School. Coach Calvin has dedicated his time and heart for 35+ years as the Athletic Director at the James A. Lane Boys & Girls Club. He is an advocate for inner city youth and has stayed connected to maintain many relationships. He has coached a number of sports teams, and many of those that he came in contact with and mentored played on a collegiate level. His love and passion for soccer has led boys, girls, and coed teams to receive many championships. Coach Calvin’s goal is to make sure each youth turns their life challenges into opportunities to achieve in life. On the soccer field, Coach Calvin has won over 40 state and invitational tournaments throughout the Southeast Region. Today we are pleased to put the spotlight on Rada Griffin. A Software Engineer, she is also Alabama’s first certified black female winemaker. A resident of Huntsville, she loves devoting time to her community; in fact, she has won a number of community service awards. A humble spirit, she truly believes in giving back. She is also a notable Signature Chef for the March of Dimes, volunteer for the Harris Home for Children, the Downtown Rescue Mission and Junior Achievement of North Alabama. Today, we are pleased to bring attention to amazing work. We proudly recognize Ms. Rada Griffin, as we celebrate the Black, Bold & Brilliant during Black History Month.
